Kihei Town Attractions & Activities:
Kihei, the home of the Pacific Whale Foundation and Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary, is the happening capital of South Maui. It is Maui's fastest growing resort and residential community and boasts several shopping centers and scores of condominiums. Many are across S. Kihei road from the beaches but cross walks and low speed limits make for easy access.
Low prices, the ability to get along without a car for days on end, lots of community resources, plentiful shopping and dining options and lots of sun make this a very popular destination for the budget minded Hawaii vacation traveler.
Kihei Town is also the perfect area on Maui for sun seekers. Temperatures range from 75°-85°F and rainfall averages less than 10" per year.
Ten miles of magnificent white sand beaches stretch along Kihei Road all the way from Maalaea Harbor to Makena. They range from unspoiled and secluded to full-facility beach parks with life guards, toilets, beach volleyball, rental facilities and more. From Keawakapu in the south to the Kihei Boat Ramp, Kamaole III, II and I, Cove Park, Kalama Park and Sugar Beach, you're sure to find a spot to keep returning to. These beach parks are well used weekends by the locals but there is plenty of sand, sun and shade for all.
The southern part of Kihei borders on Wailea and is less commercial. Here the beaches are also a bit more protected from the wind. If you like long, beach front jogs, wind surfing, etc.. central and North Kihei may have what you're looking for.
Snorkel and dive gear, kayak rentals, and boat tours are readily available. Snorkeling cruises depart for Molokini from Kihei boat ramp, usually in the morning. Many of the fish at Molokini are tame and the protective arms of the sunken crater rim assure calm waters for novice snorkelers. Good snorkeling and smooth waters are also available at many Kihei beaches - Kamaole II and III are particularly good.
Plenty of shopping and restaurants are available from fast snacks (McDonalds) to fine dining. - Azeka Place is the home of their famous ribs and the Kihei post office. A Gold's Gym and Dry Cleaner are near by.
- 24-hour medical care is available at the Kihei Professional Plaza.
- Kihei Town Center offers a convenient 24-hour supermarket, an excellent steak house and a good place to pick up sandwiches and fresh fruit smoothies.
- Across the street from Kalama Beach Park, the Kukui Mall has a triplex movie theater, Waldenbooks, Local Motion, Subway, Tempo Music and many other shops.
- Rainbow Mall is a cross-section of stores ranging from video rentals and camera shops to boutiques and restaurants.
South Kihei is not quite as hectic as the north end, but the ease of access to other areas of Maui can make up for this. Kihei Resorts are more densely populated and the condos tend not to have as much square footage as those in Wailea and Makena but there are always exceptions. Prices and ease of access to shopping and more without need of a car make these the perfect spot for many vacationers.
